Kitchen Reno!

MK3 Kitchen Reno!
Maryam Keyhani

This weekend we are tearing up the 5+ layers of tile in our kitchen and ripping out the cabinets. This project has been lingering on my mind for two years now and its finally time! Im nervous that it will snowball into one huge project but am excited for the outcome. Our plan is to go with painted white cabinets which we already bought the cabinets a year ago at IKEA As-Is section for half off and will paint them white. Black granite countertops and a neutral floor. This in all honesty is not my style but for resale in case some day we want to move. I would much rather a moody dark kitchen like the one above where I imagine myself with a glass of wine cooking up some fabulous meal. We’ll see what we end up with.

Check out the link to the photo above as well, Maryam Kayhani has a great house and jewelry!

Wall Art

Lately wall art is huge on my radar. The guest room that is being converted into the baby’s room is a lovely shade of silvery white. I painted the room less than two years ago so we decided that it really didn’t need to be painted again. I like the neutral background and it gives me a great opportunity to add color with fabrics, art, and accessories.

Art work in a series grouped together could really work on the one wall of the baby’s room.

My Jenny Lind!

Yard sales are one of my favorite Saturday morning activities. I used to go to yard sales and as soon as I saw baby stuff, I would just keep driving. Now, baby yard sales are the most exciting thing ever!

A couple weeks ago I scoured a Jenny Lind crib for $25!!  It is currently in the usual honey brown color but I would like to paint it. Here are the current top colors.

Red Jenny Lind My Jenny Lind!

I really like red for the crib but what if its a girl?

Yellow is fun too…I’ve never really been a yellow person and Im a little afraid I’ll get sick of it.

If I do go with yellow, I think it should be bold like this crib.

White Jenny Lind My Jenny Lind!Black and Tan and White all over

Or White…I might choose white if I come across some awesome fabric for the bedding and I need a neutral background. Any thoughts?

Mid-Century Modern Nursery

Interior design is one of my favorite hobbies, so of course as soon as I found out that I’m pregnant I started day dreaming about the baby’s room. My house is a mix of mid-century modern and hollywood regency.  Right now, Im more into mid-century modern so I imagine the babys room in that decor.

Bloggers Block

Blogging is something I started with the full intention of consistently creating a post 4-5 days a week. Little did I know that something in my life would change nine weeks ago and I would have the worst form of bloggers block. Everyday I sit down at my computer and want to write something interesting but nothing comes out, except…

Our Newest Addition

For weeks I’ve been wishing that I could blog about baby stuff, and now I finally can.

I have a ton of ideas!

To be a kid again…

When I was a kid, I was obsessed with doll houses. I started out with a cottage in pink, red, and white and then upgraded to this victorian town home.

Its not surprising that my fascinaton with doll houses has transitioned into a love for interior decorating (and house shopping). Look at some of the awesome doll houses on the market today!

This house is awesome!  I would want one today…well maybe in a few years.

Kaleidoscope House To be a kid again...The Kaleidoscope House

This house was designed by Laurie Simmons and Peter Wheelwright and was introduced in 2001. Moma Store sold it for a while but now its no longer for sale. Ebay sells them for around $1500! Ouch! Maybe one would show up at a yard sale?

A Washable Rug

Im on the hunt for a washable rug. I like the idea of being able to throw a rug in the washer and have it come out cleaner than I could ever get it with the vacuum. Here is what I’ve found so far…

Angela Adams introduced a line of washable rugs. They are soft and graphic.

I’ve also found a line by Sophie Depons.

These rugs are still fun and colorful and fulfill my neurotic need to have a very clean house.

Jenny Lind

One of my favorite blogs is Making it Lovely, written by Nicole Balch. Its amazing how after reading someone’s blog for a while, you start to feel like you are friends even though you have never met. Making It Lovely introduced me to Jenny Lind furniture. I’ve actually always known Jenny Lind furniture but just never knew the name.

Jenny Lind was a Swedish-born opera singer who came to the U.S. in 1850. She was such a sensation that people started naming things after her like locomotives, ships, and chapels. During Jenny Lind’s tour of the U.S. she slept in beds with turned posts. Soon cribs with a similar look became known as Jenny Lind cribs and still are today.

Union Square

In 2005, I had just graduated college and was looking to buy a fixer upper that I could rehab and then live in. As I toured different areas of the city, I came across some interesting neighborhoods including Union Square. Six years ago Union Square was a crime and drug ridden neighborhood of beautiful large town homes. It was enchanting but too scary for a 20 year old to live in by myself. I decided on Hampden instead. I always wondered what ever became of Union Square and on friday I had the opportunity to see for myself.

On Friday I attended the Baltimore Heritage’s 2011 Award Celebration. The celebration took place under a tent in Union Square. There were six houses bordering the square open for tour. One particularly stuck out to me, it was the home of David Naill and Karen Lemmert.

The house was beautifully restored and decorated in mid century modern colors and furniture.

I have never seen someone so successfuly mesh the two styles. This was a wonderful dark pumpkin on the walls, my camera phone doesn’t do it justice.

The Chambers stove came with the house and is in great shape. When I was little we had a Chambers, I love how you can close the lid and have an additional surface.

Seeing this house renews my love of mid-century furniture and decorating…I feel like re-painting!
